The population was 298 at the 2000 census.In 1913, the Elk Horn Coal Company established the town of Wayland, which they named after Clarence Wayland Watson, the president of the company. The next year on May 18, the towns post office was established. Wayland was incorporated as a sixth class city in 1923.According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km²), all of it land.
