This book reported the study on efficacy and safety of chloroquine-chlorpheniramine and halofantrine in malaria paediatric patient. 88 children with acute symptomatic uncomplicated malaria were randomised to receive chloroquine-chlorpheniramine (45) or halofantrine (43). All the children were monitored daily (clinical and parasitological examinations) for 8 days then weekly for 2 weeks.Fever and other symptoms cleared faster in halofantrine group within 8 days. The malaria parasites also cleared faster in children that received halofantrine when compared with chloroquine-chlorpheniramine group within 8 days. However there was no significant difference between chloroquine-chlorpheniramine and halofantrine groups in both symptoms and parasite clearance at 14th day. Halofantrine group had intravascular haemolysis and abdominal pain with or without vomiting while chloroquine-chlorpheniramine group had pruritus as major side effects.
