Cadmium is a non-essential heavy metal. It is well known for its toxicity, bioaccumulation and biomagnifications. It has wide range of sources from the environment and from industry. Microbes have been utilized as a bioremediation vehicle with use of genetic engineering approaches. A diverse group of microbes play an important role in this direction. Here, in this book it has been described that how six different cadmium resistant isolates (710A, 710B, KNP3, KNP9, 97AN and 62BN) were used for characterization and diversity estimation. Diversification and functional characterization was carried out with combination of Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP), Tm (melting temperature) and proteomic analysis coupled with bio-informatics tools. Further, it was reported that that 710A and 710B showed a distinct phylogenetic relationship from each other while 97AN was entirely distinct. In addition, a no. of genes /proteins were identified, perhaps those important to develop resistance in the selected isolate(s). Thus, these findings will be helpful to extract the heavy metals from the rhizosphere which will finally be useful for improving the conditions of soil for plant growth.
