This book aims to clarify gender consciousness in maritime culture by analyzing the bodies and sexualities of several specific seafaring women. Since ancient times, the maritime world has been regarded as extremely gendered and considered a male domain. Why have women been regarded as inferior in the maritime world? Why have they been marginalized in relation to ships? This book analyzes the mechanisms and preconceptions behind gender bias in the maritime world. It is important to enhance gender studies in Japan by the addition of research on seafaring women both to answer the questions mentioned above and to correct a deficiency in gender studies. This book especially focuses on a correlation between ships and women’s bodies.
