Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. NP-40 is a commercially available detergent. The full name of NP-40 is Tergitol-type NP-40, which is nonyl phenoxylpolyethoxylethanol. Care should be taken to avoid confusing NP-40 with Nonidet P-40 (octyl phenoxylpolyethoxylethanol). Nonidet P-40 is no longer sold by the chemical company, Sigma-Aldrich. Sigma-Aldrich has replaced Nonidet P-40 with Igepal CA-630, which is described as a "nonionic, non-denaturing detergent". Sigma-Aldrich claims that Igepal CA-630 is "chemically indistinguishable from Nonidet P-40". This detergent is not powerful enough to break the nuclear membrane, but can break the cytoplasmic membrane. As such, it can be used to obtain the cytoplasmic contents of a cellular culture.
