The company is based in Reston, Virginia and as of 2010 had over 7,500 employees located in over 260 offices. MAXIMUS is the nation’s largest private provider with a primary focus on health and human services programs. In 2008, the company had sales of nearly $1 billion. MAXIMUS was founded by David Mastran, a Vietnam veteran and former government worker, in 1975 and was first incorporated as a privately held company in 1975. Mastran founded the company from his garage in McLean, Virginia. The company eventually went public on June 13, 1997. In 2007, the company put itself up for sale but was unable to attract any buyers.
