As of 2009, the village has an estimated population of 7,544 and a population density of 25.6 persons per km². Its total area is 294.39 km². Higashidōri occupies the northeastern coastline of Shimokita Peninsula, facing the Pacific Ocean and Tsugaru Strait, with Cape Shiriyazaki forming a boundary between the two waters. The village has a cold maritime climate characterized by cool short summers and long cold winters with heavy snowfall. Parts of the village are within the limits of the Shimokita Hanto Quasi-National Park.
