Ihre Ursprünge gehen auf ein Heiligtum zurück, das über dem Grab des Heiligen Mauritius (deutsch St. Moritz) und seiner Gefährten von der Thebäischen Legion, die zusammen mit ihm gegen Ende des 3. Jahrhunderts nach Christus das Martyrium erlitten hatten, errichtet wurde.
