Hauterive is a municipality in the district of Sarine in the canton of Fribourg in Switzerland. It was created from the union in 2001 of the villages of Posieux and Ecuvillens.Its Cistercian abbey was founded in 1138, closing its doors in 1848 following the Sonderbund War, but was to reopen in 1939. Hauterive has an area, as of 2009, of 11.9 square kilometers (4.6 sq mi). Of this area, 6.26 km2 (2.42 sq mi) or 52.4% is used for agricultural purposes, while 3.6 km2 (1.4 sq mi) or 30.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 1.86 km2 (0.72 sq mi) or 15.6% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.19 km2 (0.073 sq mi) or 1.6% is either rivers or lakes and 0.01 km2 (2.5 acres) or 0.1% is unproductive land.
