Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Ebor Handicap is a flat horse race in Great Britain which is open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run at York over a distance of 1 mile and 6 furlongs (2,816 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in August. The event is named after the shortened form of Eboracum, the Roman name for York. It was first run in 1843, and it was originally called the "Great Ebor Handicap". The race was introduced by John Orton, a newly-appointed Clerk of the Course at York. It was initially contested over 2 miles, but its distance was later cut by 2 furlongs.
