Marine macroalgae, generally known as seaweeds, could be termed as “futuristically promising plants of the oceans”, with an immense economical and commercial value. Having vital ecological roles in the marine ecosystems, their potential as green vegetables in several maritime countries, and, their phycocolloid and bioactives, cannot be paralleled. Acknowledging these facts, these unique marine renewable living resources, are recognized as potential aquaculture crops for the 21st century. However, the chemistry of seaweeds is distinct and intriguing. This research provides particulars regarding the cultivation of the seaweed Kappaphycus alvarezii, its nutritional composition, functional properties of its protein concentrate, its antioxidant potential, as well as, the phycoremediation of heavy metals using Kappaphycus alvarezii. It would be of interest to aquaculturists and biochemists, as well as, researchers and industrialists, interested in prospective applications of seaweeds.
