Interleukin-1, a cytokine superfamily, genes are polymorphic in nature. Some allele frequencies have been shown to be associated with variation in the production capacity and efficiency of products. Moreover allelic imbalance of several cytokine genes has been described in a number of diseases. The current study was carried out to determine the VNTR polymorphism in the second intron of IL-1Ra as a putative factor of susceptibility of obesity. PCR based analysis was carried out by using primers flanking the VNTR region containing a variable number of an 86-bp tandem repeats to explore the frequency of miscellany of IL-1Ra alleles in Lahore and Gujranwala population.
